La Llorona, the Weeping Woman:Presenter: Laura Larqué

Event Description: La Llorona, the Weeping Woman: a benign children’s scary story, or a misogynistic and racist ideology that emerged during the Spanish colonial system in Mexico? 

Laura Larqué will discuss the negative effect that La Llorona, or The Weeping Woman, has had on Mexican folklore. The legend’s legacy has portrayed Mestiza and Indigenous women as vengeful figures who would rather kill their own children than lose their Spanish lover.

Funeral for FlacaEvent title: Meet the Author:  Emilly Prado, Funeral For Flaca

Presenter: Emilly Prado

Event Description: Emilly Prado is an award-winning writer, multidisciplinary artist, and speaker whose work examines identity, the systems that shape our lives, and the power of storytelling across mediums. The author will share the evolving nature of finding her path as a writer, drawing on her experiences as a first-generation Chicana and college student, and as a self-proclaimed troublemaker who struggled with school and mental health. Attendees will hear a reading from Funeral for Flaca and view archival childhood photographs to better understand the author and how she found strength through music and writing. Followed by a Q&A session.

Event title: Alice Wong Celebration of Life  Watch Party

Presenter: San Francisco Disability Cultural Center

Event Description: Join us in celebrating Disability Activist Alice Wong with a livestream of her celebration of life (happening in San Francisco). It is a 90-minute official program of speakers followed by a virtual reception. Snacks, ASL interpreters, and live captioning provided.
